ECU remapping in Manchester

An ECU remap changes the software calibration inside your engine control unit — the tables that decide fuelling, boost, timing and torque limits. Done on a suitable, healthy vehicle it can improve response and drivability. Done on the wrong vehicle, or on one with an existing fault, it can expose problems that were already there.

Our Manchester workshop treats every remap enquiry as vehicle-specific. We check what your engine and control unit support, what condition the vehicle is in and what you actually want from it before recommending anything.

What an ECU remap actually changes

Manufacturers calibrate one engine for many markets, fuel qualities, climates and service regimes, and they often use the same hardware across several power outputs. A remap adjusts that calibration within the limits of the hardware fitted. On turbocharged diesel and petrol engines the changes usually involve fuel quantity, boost pressure targets, injection or ignition timing and torque limiters.

Because the change is software, it can usually be reversed by writing the original file back, provided the original has been read and saved. We read and keep your original software before any modification so that option remains available.

Stage 1

A calibration for a standard vehicle with no hardware changes. See our Stage 1 remap page for detail on what is involved.

Stage 2

A calibration that depends on supporting hardware and a careful condition assessment. Not every vehicle is a candidate.

Gearbox (TCU)

Automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes have their own control unit and torque limits, which may need attention alongside an engine remap.

Who an ECU remap suits — and who it does not

Drivers usually enquire because they want a more responsive vehicle for towing, motorway driving or carrying loads, or because a van feels laboured when fully laden. Those are reasonable goals on a suitable vehicle. A remap is not a fix for poor running, smoke, a lack of power caused by a fault, or a DPF that keeps blocking. Those symptoms need diagnosis first, and our engine diagnostics and DPF diagnostics services exist for exactly that reason.

You should also consider your insurance, any manufacturer or extended warranty, and lease or finance terms before going ahead. Our remap insurance and warranty guide explains the questions to ask.

How we approach an ECU remap

We start with suitability rather than a sales pitch. Before any calibration is written to a control unit we want to know the vehicle is healthy: existing fault codes, boost or fuelling problems, a slipping clutch, a worn gearbox or a blocked DPF all need to be dealt with first, because tuning is not a substitute for repair and can make an existing weakness more obvious.

Where the vehicle is supported we explain what the proposed calibration is intended to change, what checks are needed and what the agreed scope of work includes. We do not publish universal power, torque or fuel-economy figures, because results depend on the individual vehicle, its condition, its software and how it is driven. If a remap is not the right answer for your vehicle, we will tell you.

What to send us before booking an ECU remap

The quickest way to get useful advice is to send the registration and a short description by WhatsApp or through the quote form. Support and suitability vary by engine, gearbox, control unit and software version, so a registration lets us check the right information instead of guessing. Any estimate given remotely is provisional until the vehicle has been seen and the required checks are complete.

  • 01Vehicle registration and approximate mileage
  • 02Make, model and engine size, if known
  • 03Any warning lights, messages, symptoms or fault codes
  • 04Existing remaps, tuning boxes or hardware modifications
  • 05How the vehicle is used — commuting, towing, short trips or heavy loads
  • 06Whether the vehicle is currently in limp mode or will not start

Visiting the workshop for an ECU remap

All work is carried out at our single workshop at Unit 2, Lancaster Works, Kingsbridge Road, Manchester M9 5SP. We do not run a mobile remapping service and we have no other branches, so every an ECU remap enquiry is booked into the same Manchester workshop. Visits are by arrangement: please call or WhatsApp before travelling so we can confirm the vehicle, the time and what the visit will involve.

Access is through the black gate. Call when you arrive so we can let you in, then keep left towards the rear of the site. We are open Monday to Friday 8am–6pm and Saturday 8am–1pm, and closed on Sunday. If the vehicle is in limp mode, showing a serious warning or will not start, tell us before setting off so we can talk about whether it is sensible to drive it or whether transport should be arranged.

Frequently asked questions

Is ECU remapping safe for my engine?

On a healthy, supported engine with a sensible calibration, a remap is designed to stay within the limits of the hardware fitted. It is not risk-free: existing wear or faults can be exposed, which is why we check condition first and decline unsuitable vehicles.

Can a remap be reversed?

In most cases yes. We read and save the original software before making changes, so it can usually be written back later. Some manufacturer software updates or control-unit replacements can complicate this, and we will explain if that applies.

Will you tell me how much power I will gain?

We do not quote universal figures. Results vary with the engine, its condition, its software and how it is driven, and we do not advertise dyno-measured gains without a measurement on your vehicle.

Do you remap at my home or business?

No. We do not offer mobile remapping. All work is carried out at our Manchester workshop at Kingsbridge Road, M9 5SP, by arrangement.

How much does an ECU remap cost?

We do not publish fixed prices because the cost depends on the vehicle, the control unit, the work required and any diagnostic findings. Send your registration and details for a provisional estimate; the final quote is confirmed once the required checks have been completed.

How do I book an ECU remap?

Send your registration, mileage and a short description by WhatsApp on 07480 657874, use the quote form, or call the workshop. We will check what is involved, then arrange a time for you to bring the vehicle to Unit 2, Lancaster Works, Kingsbridge Road, Manchester M9 5SP. Visits are by arrangement only.
