Why does my DPF light keep coming on?

A DPF light that keeps returning usually means soot is building up faster than the filter can regenerate. The most common reasons are short-trip driving, faulty pressure or temperature sensors, EGR or injector faults that increase soot, and regenerations that are repeatedly interrupted.

The usual suspects

Each needs a different fix, which is why a clean on its own often does not solve a recurring light.

  • 01Short journeys that never let the exhaust get hot enough
  • 02A faulty differential pressure sensor or split sensor pipe
  • 03Failed exhaust gas temperature sensors
  • 04A sticking EGR valve
  • 05Injector or turbo faults raising soot
  • 06Thermostat faults keeping the engine cool
  • 07High ash loading at higher mileage

What you can do now

Follow your handbook — a period of steady driving is often recommended. If the light keeps returning, comes on with other warnings or the car enters limp mode, book DPF diagnostics.

How we approach a recurring DPF light

Diagnosis comes before parts or software. We read stored fault codes, look at live data such as sensor readings, temperatures and pressures where the system makes them available, and ask how and when the problem appears. A warning light describes a symptom that the control unit has detected; it does not always name the part that has failed, so the fault code is the starting point of the investigation rather than the answer.

Once we understand the likely cause we explain the findings in plain language and discuss the sensible options, which might be a repair, a clean, a software update, a replacement part or simply a change in how the vehicle is used. You receive a quote for the agreed scope before further work goes ahead. We will not recommend removing an emissions system as a fix for a road vehicle.

Getting an answer for your own vehicle

General answers only go so far. The honest answer to “Why does my DPF light keep coming on” for your vehicle depends on its engine, gearbox, software version, mileage, service history and how you use it. Two vehicles that look identical can behave quite differently, and a warning light or a previous modification can change the picture completely.

If you would like a vehicle-specific answer, send the registration with a short description of what you want to know. We will tell you what we can from the details, what would need checking at the workshop, and whether a visit is worthwhile — including when the answer is that the work is not right for your vehicle.

What to send us before booking a recurring DPF light

The quickest way to get useful advice is to send the registration and a short description by WhatsApp or through the quote form. Support and suitability vary by engine, gearbox, control unit and software version, so a registration lets us check the right information instead of guessing. Any estimate given remotely is provisional until the vehicle has been seen and the required checks are complete.

  • 01Vehicle registration and approximate mileage
  • 02Make, model and engine size, if known
  • 03Any warning lights, messages, symptoms or fault codes
  • 04Existing remaps, tuning boxes or hardware modifications
  • 05How the vehicle is used — commuting, towing, short trips or heavy loads
  • 06Whether the vehicle is currently in limp mode or will not start

Visiting the workshop for a recurring DPF light

All work is carried out at our single workshop at Unit 2, Lancaster Works, Kingsbridge Road, Manchester M9 5SP. Frequently asked questions

Will motorway driving fix it?

It may help a filter that just needs to regenerate. It will not fix a sensor or EGR fault.

Can a remap stop the DPF light?

No. A remap is not a fix for DPF problems.

Should I just get the DPF cleaned?

Find out why it is blocking first, or the problem is likely to return.

How much does a recurring DPF light cost?

We do not publish fixed prices because the cost depends on the vehicle, the control unit, the work required and any diagnostic findings. Send your registration and details for a provisional estimate; the final quote is confirmed once the required checks have been completed.
